ABSTRACT
The specification defines the standards and protocols for generating, collecting, and exporting telemetry data, ensuring consistency and interoperability across diverse systems and platforms. This chapter covers the key elements of the specification, including the data model, the application programming interfaces (APIs) and software development kits (SDKs), and the OpenTelemetry Protocol (OTLP). The chapter distinguishes between OpenTelemetry (OTel) versioning and stability, including support guarantees. It focuses on the OpenTelemetry data model, including protocol support and OTLP. The chapter also focuses on the differentiation between the OpenTelemetry API and SDK. The API specification contains: signals, including baggage, traces, metrics, and logs; context, including propagators; and attributes. The SDK specification includes signal-specific processors, exporters, and samplers, configuration, and resources. The OTel data specification covers the requirements for data models, communication protocols, semantic conventions, and compatibility guidelines with other standards.
