Title: Introducing OpenTelemetry ! Authors: Steve Flanders Venue: Wiley eBooks Year: 2024 Canonical: doi:10.1002/9781394319732.ch2 URL: https://doi.org/10.1002/9781394319732.ch2 Collector: openalex OA: false ABSTRACT OpenTelemetry (OTel) has emerged as a comprehensive solution designed to standardize the generation, collection, and analysis of telemetry data across diverse environments. This chapter introduces to OpenTelemetry, exploring its origins, architecture, and core components. It also sets the stage for a deep dive into the open standard and reference implementations. The chapter focuses on observability problems and the need for open standards. It explains the history and goals of the OpenTelemetry project. The chapter analyses OpenTelemetry components and project status. The specification is the open standard and is foundational to all reference implementations, namely data collection and instrumentation. It is made up of four primary subcomponents: data specification, application programming interface (API) specification, software development kit (SDK) specification, and versioning and stability. OTel is a constantly evolving project. Initially, it focused on delivering the API, SDK, and data specification for traces, metrics, and logs.
