ABSTRACT
DataFormatAnalysis v1.0.0 Overview This release publishes the dataset accompanying the study: Kasper, B., Pawlitzek, R., & Hellwig, M. (2025). Towards Sustainable IoT: Space Efficiency and Serialization Speed of Data Exchange Formats (IEEE ICE/ITMC 2025). The dataset contains raw output files and experimental results from a comparative evaluation of data exchange formats commonly used in IoT environments. The analysis focuses on storage efficiency and serialization performance across 27 format variants. Included Data Serialized output files for all evaluated use cases and formats File size measurements (fileSizes.xlsx) Serialization speed measurements (speed.xlsx) Documentation describing methodology and experimental setup Workflow illustration (Workflow.png) Evaluated Formats The dataset includes results for: Avro BSON Cap'n Proto (packed and unpacked) CBOR CSV (with and without header) EXI FlatBuffers FlexBuffers Hessian INI Amazon Ion (text and binary) Java Serialization JSON MessagePack Protobuf RDF/XML RDF Turtle Smile TLV TOML Thrift UBJSON XDR XML YAML Use Cases The benchmark includes representative IoT-related data structures: HeartData HttpResponse ImageData ImageDescriptor LocationData Person SensorValue SmartLightController Purpose This dataset enables researchers and practitioners to: Compare serialization formats for IoT applications Analyze trade-offs between storage efficiency and processing speed Reproduce results presented in the associated publication Support further research on sustainable and resource-efficient IoT systems License Released under the CC0 1.0 Public Domain Dedication.
